Former co-owner Darwin "Spud" Newhouse will continue to manage the Lincoln operation, which is located at 910 Woodlawn Road. His brother and partner in Mitchell-Newhouse, Norm Newhouse, plans to retire from the business in the near future.

Referring to the purchase, Hundman Lumber owner Mike Hundman said, "It's a good fit for both companies. The Newhouses have built their business on personal customer service, quality products and involvement in the community -- just as Hundman Lumber has." He added that Hundman Lumber has greater buying power, and the company will expand the products and services offered to customers of the Lincoln store.

Among new services, plans are being made to offer boom truck deliveries in Lincoln. New product lines will also be introduced in the near future, including Aristokraft cabinets, Georgia Pacific siding and Certainteed roofing. In addition, Lincoln-area customers will have access to products through Hundman wholesale divisions, including granite and other custom countertops from Hundman CounterTop and roof trusses, floor trusses and wall panels from Hundman Truss and Wall Systems.

Both Mitchell-Newhouse and Hundman Lumber have been affiliated with Do-it Best, a retailer-owned wholesale supplier of home improvement products, and this membership will continue.

Mitchell-Newhouse Lumber Company was founded in 1954 by David Mitchell, Roger Mitchell, Luther Newhouse and Bessie Gallagher. Luther Newhouse died in 1967.

His sons, Norm and Spud Newhouse, have been managing the business for the 40 years since then. The Newhouses bought the Mitchell family's share of the business in 2002.

With the sale of the business this week, Spud Newhouse said, "We are looking forward to working with Hundman Lumber. Like us, they are a family business, and they share our commitment to taking care of customers. This change will be good for our customers."

Hundman Lumber was founded by the late Richard Hundman in 1950. His son, Mike, has managed the firm since 1974 and now owns the company, which is headquartered in Bloomington. In McLean County, where the firm started, Hundman Lumber has been the leading supplier of building materials to new construction and remodeling contractors for over 25 years.

In addition to the Lincoln store, Hundman Lumber Companies has seven other building materials stores in central Illinois, with locations in Bloomington, Fairbury, Champaign,

Decatur, Manteno, Peoria and Springfield. The firm also operates five wholesale divisions, providing construction firms and building materials dealers with custom countertops, millwork, fabricated wall panels, engineered roof and floor trusses, and commercial doors and hardware.
