[November 10, 2007]  SPRINGFIELD -- The Illinois Jaycees are accepting nominations for the top 10 young people in the state of Illinois and will honor the winners during a special honors program at their statewide general meeting on May 3, 2008, at the Decatur Conference Center and Hotel in Decatur.

Each year the Illinois Jaycees and the Illinois Junior Chamber International Senate select and honor 10 outstanding men and women between the ages of 21 and 39 from across Illinois. These "Ten Outstanding Young People" are selected on the basis of achievements in a number of areas, including personal improvement, financial success, economic innovation, social improvement to major contemporary problems, and philanthropic contribution, as well as government and volunteer service. Past winners include Gary Fencik, Chris Zorich and Bill Self.

"Applications are due by Nov. 30," said John Gill, TOYP co-chair for 2008. "Anyone interested in nominating an individual must contact me by phone at 708-431-0882 or e-mail at jgill69@ameritech.net prior to the Nov. 30 deadline. I can send them an application, or applications are also available on the Illinois Jaycee Web site at www.iljaycees.org."

TOYP winners will be the guests of the Illinois Jaycees for the day and night of the honors program. Each award winner will receive a silver medallion and plaque during a program that dramatizes their achievements. "Award winners will then have the opportunity to inspire and challenge fellow young persons of Illinois during the program," said Wendy Copeland, 2008 TOYP co-chair. "Winning individuals may also be submitted to the United States Junior Chamber for consideration of their Ten Outstanding Young Americans Award."

There are nearly 4,000 Illinois Jaycees in over 100 chapters throughout the state. Illinois has the second-largest number of Jaycees of any state in the United States. The Jaycees provide individuals between the age of 18 and 41 the opportunity to develop personal and leadership skills while serving their community.

Every year, each chapter in the Jaycees conducts numerous programs to serve the community and accumulate funds for operation of the chapter and community donations. Included in these projects are Fourth of July festivals, Christmas tree sales, haunted houses, garage sales and other projects that benefit the community and help raise funds.
