[November 21, 2007]  NORMAL -- On Monday, freshman guard Shala Jackson was named the Missouri Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week for women's basketball. Jackson, the Redbirds' freshman leader in every statistical category, averaged 14.0 points and 4.3 rebounds per game in three Redbird wins last week.

In the home opener against Green Bay, Jackson scored a career-high 20 points to lead the Redbirds to their first-ever victory against the Phoenix. She was 8-for-11 from the field, including the first two 3-point field goals of her career, and had five rebounds, two assists and a career-best three steals.

Jackson was named to the all-tournament team at the Best Western Roundball Classic in Tampa, Fla., after averaging 11.0 points and 4.0 rebounds in the two-day tournament. She had 15 points and a career-high six rebounds and three assists in the opening game against Tennessee-Martin. She added seven points and two rebounds in the championship game against South Florida, despite playing just 12 minutes due to foul trouble.

The Fort Wayne, Ind., native leads the team in free-throw percentage (.728), is second in rebounding (4.3 rpg) and field goal percentage (.528), and fourth in scoring (13.0 ppg). She is the first Redbird to be named the conference's newcomer of the week and the first since Kenyatta Shelton earned the honor on Jan. 8.

Illinois State (4-0) hosts No. 24 DePaul (3-0) on Sunday at 2:05 p.m.
