NORMAL -- On Monday, freshman
guard
Shala Jackson was named the Missouri Valley Conference Newcomer
of the Week for women's basketball. Jackson, the Redbirds' freshman
leader in every statistical category, averaged 14.0 points and 4.3
rebounds per game in three Redbird wins last week.

In the home opener against Green Bay, Jackson scored a career-high
20 points to lead the Redbirds to their first-ever victory against
the Phoenix. She was 8-for-11 from the field, including the first
two 3-point field goals of her career, and had five rebounds, two
assists and a career-best three steals.
Jackson was named to the all-tournament team at the Best Western
Roundball Classic in Tampa, Fla., after averaging 11.0 points and
4.0 rebounds in the two-day tournament. She had 15 points and a
career-high six rebounds and three assists in the opening game
against Tennessee-Martin. She added seven points and two rebounds in
the championship game against South Florida, despite playing just 12
minutes due to foul trouble.
The Fort Wayne, Ind., native leads the team in free-throw
percentage (.728), is second in rebounding (4.3 rpg) and field goal
percentage (.528), and fourth in scoring (13.0 ppg). She is the
first Redbird to be named the conference's newcomer of the week and
the first since Kenyatta Shelton earned the honor on Jan. 8.
Illinois State (4-0) hosts No. 24 DePaul (3-0) on Sunday at 2:05
p.m.
