"This is a great honor to be selected to coach in the Hula Bowl,"
Zook said. "I really look forward to the opportunity to work with
the best college football has to offer. The Hula Bowl has such a
rich tradition, and I feel privileged to be a part of this year's
game." Zook is in his third season at the helm of the Illinois
football program. After two two-win seasons, Zook has led the
Fighting Illini to a 9-3 record (6-2 in the Big Ten), marking the
biggest turnaround in college football this season. He also has
Illinois bowl-eligible for the first time since 2001. Zook, in his
sixth year as a head coach, has produced four bowl-eligible squads
(three at Florida, one at Illinois).
For the past two seasons, Illinois has boasted one of the
nation's top-10 rushing offenses. The Illini won the 2006 conference
rushing title and have led the Big Ten through 12 weeks this season
as well with a 266.2 average. For his efforts, Zook has been named
the Big Ten Coach of the Year.
"We are pleased that Coach Zook will be coaching in the 2008 Hula
Bowl game," said Logan. "His resume speaks for itself, and we are
pleased that he has agreed to join Coach Miles in leading our Aina
team. Coach Zook’s style and drive will resonate well with our
all-star football players and the state of Hawaii."
