[November 27, 2007]  ALBION, Pa. (AP) -- A convicted murderer remained at large Tuesday, two days after he escaped from a medium-security prison by hiding in a garbage can, state police said.

The inmate, Malcolm Kysor, 53, has been serving a life sentence since 1988 for an early 1980s murder in Erie County. He was discovered missing from the State Correctional Institution-Albion during a routine check Sunday.

Surveillance camera video showed that after Kysor hid in the garbage can, another inmate, John Gromer, helped Kysor escape by placing a box and plastic bag over him for concealment, then pushed the can off a loading dock and into the back of a pickup truck, police said.

Investigators said Kysor told Gromer someone on the outside was going to pick him up.

Erie County District Attorney Brad Foulk said he would decide whether to file charges against Gromer, 26, of Philadelphia.

The FBI announced an unspecified reward for information leading to Kysor's capture.

A lockdown remained in effect at the prison Tuesday, authorities said.

The prison houses about 2,300 inmates and is located just outside downtown Albion, a small town about 20 miles southwest of Erie in Pennsylvania's northwest corner.
