[November 30, 2007]  (AP) Forecasters predicted heavy snow in parts of the Southwest and cooler temperatures in the Northeast on Friday, while the West Coast was expected to be unseasonably cold.

A winter storm was expected in the Southwest that could drop heavy snow in mountainous areas and rain at lower elevations. The storm could also bring snow to the southern Sierra Nevadas in California and showers and heavy rain to San Diego and Los Angeles.

Southern California was expected to get chilly, wet weather, but the remainder of the West Coast was expected to be unseasonably cold.

A few snow showers were expected in Washington state and Oregon, while the northern Rockies were in for mostly clear skies.

The Plains region was expected to have clear skies, but temperatures would likely remain cool.

Clear skies were expected along coastal areas of the Northeast, but lake-effect snow was expected in areas inland.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Thursday ranged from a low of minus 11 degrees at Hallock, Minn., to a high of 85 degrees at Punta Gorda, Fla.
