During the free seminar, ALMH physical therapists will discuss how
patients know it is time to consider joint replacement surgery, the
surgical process and postoperative therapy process.
Representatives from Zimmer Inc. will display and demonstrate the
latest orthopedic products available for joint pain and arthritic
treatment.
Individuals experiencing chronic pain in their knees or hips are
encouraged to attend. To register, call 217-732-5065 or e-mail
rehab@almh.org.
Both Dr. Rodney Herrin and Dr. Tomasz Borowiecki perform several
joint replacement surgeries at ALMH each year. Therapy begins in the
hospital just one day after surgery. Most patients choose to
continue their physical therapy at ALMH for all or part of the next
six weeks.
Total joint replacement, or arthoplasty, is the most common
surgical method in the world today. It has been proven as an
effective and practical treatment for severe osteoarthritis, one of
the main causes of joint pain.

Osteoarthritis affects an estimated 21 million people in the
United States and is characterized by mild to debilitating pain in
the hands and joints such as knees, hips, feet and back. According
to the Arthritis Foundation, the disease is most prevalent among
individuals 45 years of age and older. Women are more prone to the
disease.
Osteoarthritis is a degenerative disease that causes cartilage
breakdown in joints. When the cartilage buffer between bones is
removed, the resulting bone-against-bone friction can cause joint
pain or aching (often after exercise or extended periods of pressure
on weight-bearing joints) and limited or eventual loss of range of
motion.
Although beginning as minor discomfort, symptoms usually progress
to the extent that sleep is disturbed and normal everyday functions
become limited.
