[October 08, 2007]  "Portrait of a Soldier," an event that particularly focuses on honoring soldiers who have served or are serving our country since the events of Sept. 11, 2001, will take place Thursday in downtown Lincoln. The main ceremony, planned over the noon hour, will be on the Broadway Street side of the Logan County Courthouse.

The event is centered around 184 portraits of Illinois soldiers who have lost their lives since 911. The portraits were drawn by a young Mattoon artist, Cameron Shilling, and will remain on exhibit in the Logan County Courthouse Oct. 11-16.

Numerous invitations have been sent out inviting government officials and other people of importance. Lt. Gov. Pat Quinn will be there unless he is called elsewhere for another lost soldier, organizer Roger Matson said. City and county officials will be in attendance. And representatives of all branches of military and veteran organizations are anticipated.

Recognizing our soldiers for their sacrifice is close to the hearts of many in our country right now.
