Members of the 2007 class of the ISU Athletics Hall of Fame are
former student-athletes Frank Purdy (men's tennis, 1951-54), Jackie
Ryan-Beck (women's golf, 1982-85) and Galen Scott (football,
1997-2000), as well as longtime supporter and game-day volunteer Jan
Johnson, who will receive the Campbell "Stretch" Miller Award. The
official induction ceremony will take place Saturday in the Prairie
Room of the Bone Student Center on the Illinois State University
campus. The event will begin at 8 a.m. The four honorees will also
be recognized during halftime of the Illinois State-Indiana State
football game later that day. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
The class is the 34th in the history of the ISU Athletics Hall of
Fame, which began with the charter class in 1972. Tickets for the
Hall of Fame ceremony are $25 per person and can be purchased
through The Redbird Club office by calling Anne Campbell at
309-438-3803. Tickets for the event must be ordered by Wednesday.

Frank Purdy
Men's tennis, 1951-54
In his four seasons at Illinois State, the Redbirds won four
straight Interstate Intercollegiate Athletic Conference
championships … the Redbirds were also undefeated in IIAC match play
during his career … ISU owned a 54-13 dual-meet record during his
career … won the IIAC No. 3 singles championship and the No. 1
doubles crown in 1952 (teaming with Tom Henderson, a member of the
ISU Athletics Hall of Fame) … as a junior (1953), claimed the
conference's No. 2 singles title, while winning his second straight
No. 1 doubles championship with Evan Strawn as his partner … in
1954, he captured the No. 1 singles championship and was a
three-time champion at No. 1 doubles, this time teaming with John
Holcomb … was named the team captain during his senior season … in
1953, led the Redbirds to their first National Association of
Intercollegiate Athletics district and national tournaments in
school history.
Jackie Ryan-Beck
Women's golf, 1982-85
Led Illinois State to the 1983 and 1985 Gateway Conference
championship … the 1983 Redbirds earned their first NCAA tournament
bid in school history … the medalist at the 1985 Gateway Conference
Championship … named to the six-member Gateway Conference All-Decade
Golf Team in 1992 … a two-time All-Gateway Conference selection
(1983 and 1985) … ranked No. 61 in the nation in 1983 … fired a 224
at the 1985 Gateway Conference Championship, which ranks tied for
No. 3 for the best 54-hole score in conference history … had nine
top-10 finishes in her collegiate career … a native of Lockport and
attended Lockport High School.

Galen Scott
Football, 1997-2000
A three-time all-American and four-time all-conference selection
… currently ranks second at Illinois State in career tackles with
579 … owns the school record for tackles in a game (27 versus
Southern Utah, Oct. 31, 1998) and tackles in a season (186 in 1998)
… defensive leader on ISU's first two playoff teams (1998 and 1999)
… at the time, he was only the sixth Redbird player to receive
all-America honors in three different seasons … named a 1998
Football Gazette First-Team All-American and a Sports Network Second
Team All-American that same season … in 1999 and 2000, received
third-team all-America honors from the Football Gazette … as a
freshman in 1997, was named to the Gateway All-Newcomer Team and
received honorable mention all-league honors … first-team
all-Gateway in 1998 and 2000, while earning second-team plaudits in
1999 … during a 29-game span, posted 28 double-digit tackle
performances … owns the freshman record for tackles in a game with
23 … of the eight best single-game tackle performances in Redbird
history, he has three of them … of his 579 career tackles, 337 were
solo stops … also ranks No. 2 in school history in career tackles
for loss with 45 … totaled 19 quarterback sacks over four seasons …
played in 48 games with 40 starting assignments … product of
Orlando, Fla., and Evans High School.
Jan Johnson

An Illinois State alumna and a true friend of Redbird Athletics …
she currently serves on the official game-day crew for four Redbird
athletic teams … began volunteering with ISU Athletics in 1984, when
she served as a line judge at Redbird volleyball matches … later she
became a member of the volleyball bench crew and has been a member
ever since … in 1989, began working on the bench crew for ISU
women's basketball, by operating the game clock … still volunteers
at women's basketball games, but now works as the official scorer …
in 2000, she became the scoreboard operator at the Redbird Softball
Complex, and she is also in her fourth season working at Redbird
football games … during her association with Illinois State
Athletics, she has also volunteered at both gymnastics and track and
field meets … as a student at Illinois State, she competed on
volleyball's team 3 and team 4, while also playing softball on team
3 … a native of Pontiac … she has worked at Illinois State
University for 25 years and currently serves as a member of the
systems, graphics and training staff at Milner Library … she
received the campus' Distinguished Service Award in 2003.
