Local initiative launched to show appreciation to soldiers overseas this Christmas           Send a link to a friend

[October 12, 2007]  An opportunity has been created that allows you to easily express your appreciation to soldiers serving in Iraq. Books will be sent to soldiers from Logan County and the surrounding counties who are away from the comforts of home this Christmas.

A hand-drawn picture made by a Logan County student in first to fifth grade will be added to each of the books.

Sponsored by Main Street Lincoln, the initiative is chaired by Tecia Hennessey and co-chaired by Roger Matson of Main Street Lincoln Promotions Committee. They need your help in getting names of soldiers and their addresses.

Donations for books are also requested. You can have a label placed in a book with your name and sent to a soldier of your choice.

The $15 donation covers the cost of the book and postage, with $2.50 of that amount going toward a monument.

The monument will be 42 inches high and 10 inches thick with a 24-inch base. Its location has not been determined yet. But it is anticipated to be located in Lincoln, either at the All Veterans Park or at the Logan County Courthouse. The monument will commemorate those who have served since Sept. 11, 2001.

The book donation deadline is Nov. 1.
