[October 16, 2007]  NEW YORK  (AP) -- Stocks that were moving substantially or trading heavily Monday on the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq Stock Market:

NYSE

  • Citigroup Inc., down $1.67 at $46.20.
    Third-quarter profits at the biggest U.S. bank fell 57 percent after it took a hit of more than $3 billion in mortgage-backed security losses, leveraged debt write-downs, and fixed-income trading losses.

  • SLM Corp., down $2.10 at $46.35.
    An investor group that seeks to walk way from a $25 billion buyout of the student lender, better known as Sallie Mae, told a Delaware court it should not have to pay the $900 million breakup fee stipulated in the agreement.

  • Medtronic Inc., down $6.75 at $49.58.
    The medical device maker is stopping distribution of wires that connect some of its defibrillators to patients' hearts after learning they may have contributed to five deaths.

  • Biogen Idec Inc., up $13.70 at $83.13.
    The biotechnology company said it may sell itself and has attracted some interest from potential buyers.

  • Force Protection Inc., down $1.72 at $22.23.
    The armored vehicle maker found material weaknesses in accounting system, according to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

  • The Children's Place Retail Stores Inc., up 99 cents at $24.91.
    Ezra Dabah, the former chief executive and a current director of the retailer is considering making a bid for the retailer, according to an SEC filing.
