On 10/15/07, at approximately 8:45 pm, Randy W. Crawford was traveling westbound on US Route 136 about 4 miles east of Havana. He was operating an 2007 International truck tractor semi trailer combination (semi). Crawford was behind another semi. The first semi was pulling into a rest area. Crawford, in an effort to avoid striking the semi ahead of him, entered the eastbound lane into the path of an eastbound semi. The eastbound semi, a 1998 Western Star, was operated by Robert L. Wiand. The Crawford and Wiand vehicles collided in the eastbound lanes. The Crawford semi continued to the south shoulder and the Wiand semi continued to the north shoulder.

Wiand was pronounced dead at the scene. Both vehicles suffered major damage. US Route 136 was closed and traffic rerouted until Tuesday afternoon at 1 pm to allow for reconstruction and cleanup. No citations have been issued as the investigation continues.
