[October 22, 2007]  (AP) Severe thunderstorms, some packing high winds and hail, were expected to trek across the country on Monday, while Santa Ana winds were expected to fan the flames of wildfires in Southern California.

Thunderstorms were expected in the southern Plains and lower Mississippi Valley, with severe storms along the Gulf Coast packing hail and 60-mph winds. The strongest storms were expected near the coast, but heavy rain was expected from the Mississippi River to the Southeast.

In Southern California, hot, dry Santa Ana winds were expected to fuel wildfires enhanced by dry conditions.

Elsewhere in California and the Southwest, conditions were expected to remain dry and warm.

Conditions in the Northwest were expected to be wet as a storm dissipates after moving ashore over western Canada.

The East was expected to be dry and clear.

Temperatures in the lower 48 states Sunday ranged from a low of 7 degrees at Ruth, Nev., to a high of 96 degrees at Laredo, Texas.
