SPRINGFIELD -- A resolution of the Illinois PTA
to require an eye examination for every child entering kindergarten
in a public, private or parochial school has come to fruition as law
in the form of
Public Act 95-0671.
|
The Illinois PTA resolution stated in part: "That the Illinois PTA,
through its constituent organizations, support legislation to
require a comprehensive eye and vision examination, by an
optometrist or ophthalmologist, for all children entering
kindergarten (or first grade) as a necessary prerequisite to
academic learning."
After the adoption of the resolution, the Illinois PTA joined
forces with Vision First and others to have
Senate Bill 641 introduced by Sen. Deanna Demuzio. The
legislation was filed Feb. 28 by Demuzio. The bill was passed by the
Senate, and Rep. Jil Tracy sponsored the bill in the House, where it
was passed on May 31. It became Public Act 95-0671 on Oct. 17 and
takes effect Jan. 1, 2008.
The Illinois PTA urges all parents to have their children's eyes
examined early so that any eye problems can be diagnosed and
treated, enabling the children to do their best in school.
