Merrill Lynch's chairman and chief executive, Stan O'Neal, retired Tuesday as expected after the brokerage last week posted the biggest quarterly loss in its 93-year history, but no replacement was named. Alberto Cribiore, a director since 2003, was named interim non-executive chairman. Merrill Lynch fell $1.90, or 2.8 percent, to $65.52 after O'Neal's announced departure. Procter & Gamble was the biggest loser among the 30 Dow components after cautioning that higher commodity costs will squeeze second-quarter margins. P&G fell $2.71, or 3.8 percent, to $69.12. Although Qwest reported a third-quarter profit jump, its shares tumbled $1, or 12 percent, to $7.18. Overall revenue dipped, and the telecommunications company provided few details about its outlook. The technology-dominated Nasdaq performed better than the other indexes, helped by ongoing strength in such bellwethers as Apple Inc., Microsoft Corp., and Google Inc. Apple rose $3.84, or 2.1 percent, to $188.93; Microsoft rose 72 cents, or 2.1 percent, to $32.29; and Google rose $18.17, or 2.7 percent. to $697.40. Crude oil prices retreated $2.87 to $90.66 a barrel, after hitting a record on Monday above $93 a barrel. Gold also fell, and the dollar was mixed against other major currencies. Declining issues outnumbered advancers by about 3 to 2 on the New York Stock Exchange, where volume came to 767.4 million shares. The Russell 2000 index of smaller companies fell 2.79, or 0.34 percent, to 818.93. Overseas, Britain's FTSE **0 fell 0.70 percent, Germany's DAX index fell 0.40 percent, and France's CAC-40 fell 0.55 percent.
