The nation's weather          Send a link to a friend

[September 24, 2007]  (AP) While high pressure kept both coasts sunny and warm early Monday, storms roiled the nation's heartland, especially the Midwest, Rockies and Plains.

Low pressure was to move into the Midwest, bringing wet weather to a large portion of the region. Southerly winds should carry heavy rain and thunderstorms into the Plains and lower Mississippi Valley.

Rain was to start in the northern Plains in the early morning hours and spread through the rest of the region by afternoon. The chance of strong to severe storms was to increase throughout the Plains and Midwest, culminating in a strong chance of hail and gusty winds and a slight chance of brief tornadoes.

Wet weather also was expected to linger throughout the northern Rockies as the tail end of the trough in the Midwest lingers over Montana.

Florida and the Gulf Coast also were to see continued wet weather as an area of low pressure in the Gulf of Mexico struggles to develop tropical characteristics.

Temperatures in the West were to rebound substantially from last week's chilly highs. The East will still be somewhat warmer with temperatures pushing into the 90s in many locations and temperatures in the upper 70s expected as far north as Maine.

Temperatures in the lower 48 states on Sunday ranged from a low of 8 degrees at Twin Falls, Idaho, to a high of 98 degrees at Wink, Texas.
