Tuesday night was no exception. After several weeks
of what seems like almost nonstop intense matches, the Lincoln Lady
Railers added to the LCHS Homecoming festivities this week by easily
defeating the Taylorville Tornadoes. The Railers won by a match
score of 25-13 and 25-15. The score does not reflect the ease with
which the Railers won.
LCHS improves to 10-8 overall and 3-1 in conference play.
Taylorville remains winless in the CS8.
The Railer victory was never really in question, but the Railers
did give their fans a few moments of concern in the first game of
the varsity match. The Railers trailed 7-4 early on as the home team
seemed less than excited about pounding out a victory. The Railers'
service game then took charge, and when the next side-out occurred,
the score was Lincoln 11, Taylorville 7. From there the Railers
slowly but surely pulled away and edged toward a final victory
margin of 25-13.
Serving, mostly by Molly Goodrich and Ashley Bonaparte, led the
way to the victory. The usual Railer net crew of Jamie McFadden (12
kills) and Ashley Meyrick (six kills) had their share of unblocked
kills, and Laura Aughenbaugh also had a couple of nice kills and a
block in between.
Game two found the teams trading points until each team arrived
at the dozen mark. From there the serving of Emily Berglin moved the
Railers to the end of the night. Berglin continued to serve until
the score reached 23 points for the Railers. A couple of Railer
kills for good measure finished the night for all concerned.
As usual in an easy match, the serving game was accentuated.
Statistically, Bonaparte led the Railers with 11 service points,
including five aces. Berglin added 10 service points of her own.
Goodrich chipped in her share as well, including three aces.
With the anticipation an easier match, Lincoln's coach Howe had
the luxury of letting all of the Lady Railers see playing time
Tuesday night. I am always in favor of that kind of plan since
everyone on the team practices hard each week and everyone should be
rewarded with playing time when possible. The Railers seemed relaxed
and looked like they were having some fun.

With the easier match over and the rest of the week off from
foreign competition, the Lady Railers have a few days to get ready
for a tough end-of-season and postseason schedule in October. With
maybe only one or possibly two exceptions, the Railers will see some
extremely tough competition from here on out. Next week finds the
Railers traveling to Class 4A Normal Community. The next week, two
home games against Jacksonville and Bloomington will put the Railers
to the test. After that comes the CS8 finale against Chatham and
then the postseason.
It's time to step it up, ladies. Nothing is easy from here on
out.
GO, RAILERS!!
