[April 15, 2008]  An early retirement incentive package from the city of Lincoln led to a number of senior officer retirements in both the police and fire departments this past year. New officers have been hired, are in training and will be ready for the streets early this fall for the police department.

Two Lincoln police officers have received promotions as of April 1. Both Robert Sherron and Matthew Vlahovich were nominated by Chief Stuart Erlenbush and approved by the city council for promotion from patrolman to corporal.

Sgt. Mike Geriets was recently promoted to deputy police chief to fill the vacancy left by the retirement of Harley Mullins, 14-year assistant police chief. Mullins was hired as of Dec. 1, 2007, to stay on as assistant until a deputy chief could be chosen and trained.

The fire department is searching for a new fire chief to replace James Davis, who also opted for the early retirement. Applications for fire chief are in, and the committee is narrowing the field of candidates with the expectation of presenting a final candidate to the council soon.

On another matter, the council agreed on April 7 to hire Robert Shattuck with J.H. Petty and Associates, Ltd. The architects would make design changes to the City Hall offices for security measures. Buildings and grounds chairman Joni Tibbs said that the security updates would focus on the open areas that need to be protected.

At a recent committee meeting it was discussed to enclose the city clerk's office and the building permit office, which now have open counter windows. These would be enclosed, and perhaps bulletproof communications and payment windows would be added.

Another security measure would be to reduce public access to the building to only one entry.

Possible security measures during meetings were also discussed.

The council plans to gather for two meetings prior to Tuesday's committee-of-the-whole meeting at 7 p.m. At 6:15 is a finance committee meeting to finalize the 2008-2009 fiscal year budget. And at 6:30 there will be a public meeting to discuss sewer overflow programs that would take effect throughout the city.
