Springfield woman injured in single-car accident on Route 54

[April 24, 2008]  SPRINGFIELD -- An unidentified Springfield woman was airlifted to a Springfield hospital following a late-afternoon accident Wednesday on Route 54.

The woman was described as a white female, 45 years old from Springfield. She was driving a teal 1992 Chevrolet Coupe.

The accident occurred about two miles southwest of Chestnut on Route 54 westbound and 2000th Avenue at 4:45 p.m.

The vehicle first went off the right side of the roadway into the gravel shoulder. The driver overcorrected back to the left, crossing over both lanes of traffic, and traveled into the ditch on the left side of the roadway. The vehicle continued traveling through the ditch, where it began rolling over several times before coming to rest in an open field.

An Air Evac helicopter flew the driver to Memorial Medical Center, where she was listed in critical condition.

Agencies assisting were the Illinois State Police, Logan County Paramedics, Mount Pulaski Fire, Mount Pulaski EMS, Mount Pulaski Police, Logan County Sheriff's Department, Latham Fire, Chestnut Fire, Logan County Emergency Management Agency and Air Evac.
