 The storms were expected mostly east of the Appalachian mountains, though wet weather was to spread farther inland in New York.
Temperatures were to drop substantially.
In the Midwest, some light snowfall was expected, mostly in southern Wisconsin and northern Illinois.
West of the Mississippi River, the skies were to be clear through the Rockies and into the Intermountain region. Temperatures were to be in the 80s through the western Plains and north into Canada.
Highs in the Desert Southwest were expected to break 100 degrees in southeastern California and southern Arizona. Northern California was to cool down, however.
In the Northwest, some rain was to fall in the coastal valleys, with heavy precipitation anticipated in the Cascades and coastal mountain ranges.
Temperatures in the Lower 48 states on Sunday ranged from 3 degrees at Berthoud Pass, Colo., to 102 degrees at Fullerton, Calif.
