'Fair' weather weekend brings huge crowds to fairgrounds

[August 04, 2008]  The 72nd annual Logan County Fair is in the history books. The big week had a little of everything weatherwise. It had heavy winds and torrential rains its opening evening. And several of the days were downright uncomfortable as humid conditions with thick cloud cover made for a greenhouse effect.

Fairgoers and personnel took the warm, humid conditions in stride. Fair week is always in the heat of the summer, and a few uncomfortable days are to be expected.

The weekend break in temperature helped the fair gain back its opening night losses. A brief cooling rain on Sunday morning put temperatures in the low 80s, which brought huge numbers to the fairgrounds. On Sunday evening, vehicles parked on the frontage road encircled the fairgrounds and traveled all the way south to the front of The Christian Village, four blocks from the nearest gate.

Fair officials confirmed that although numbers are yet to be tabulated, big crowds on Friday night and the weekend made this year's edition an obvious success.

Luehrs' Ideal Rides officials stated that the fair was a good one for them. It is hard to make up for a complete night's loss of business, which happened to them on Tuesday, but they had strong attendance Friday through Sunday that helped get their ticket sales back into respectable numbers.
