[August 27, 2008]  (AP)  The remnants of Tropical Storm Fay in the Southeast moved slowly northward into the mid-Atlantic on Wednesday. There was the possibility of a brief tornado or two in addition to locally gusty winds.

Auto RepairIn the midsection of the nation, widely scattered showers and thunderstorms were expected from the northern Plains into the Upper Midwest. Large hail and damaging winds were possible Wednesday afternoon and evening.

To the West, light to moderate rain was forecast for the Pacific Northwest and portions of the Northern Rockies. Most of the precipitation was to end by Wednesday night, except in the northern most parts of the Pacific Northwest.

Further south, showers and thunderstorms were expected in the Southwest and portions of the southern Rockies on Wednesday.

California was expected to warm rapidly. Portions of the Central Valley were expecting afternoon temperatures going over the triple-digit mark. The coastal regions were to see less fog along with mild temperatures. The Northeast was to remain in the 70s.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states on Tuesday ranged from a low of 23 degrees at Chemult, Ore., to a high of 114 degrees at Death Valley, Calif.
