Retired business executives in Logan County

Fact:

"Over 70% of businesses fail in the first five years."

Why does this happen?

"Primarily because they don't have a business plan."

-- Joel Smiley, executive director for Lincoln & Logan County Development Partnership

[August 28, 2008]  How can Lincoln and Logan County improve these odds?

Smiley would like to start a SCORE program here in Lincoln. SCORE volunteers help local business startups and provide guidance to small businesses. They assist with developing a business plan, as well as a budget. "The more successful the business plan is, the greater the chance the business will survive," Smiley said.

SCORE provides counselors to area business. It is a nationally known program that utilizes the talents and experience of retired business executives. SCORE harnesses the knowledge of retired professionals from the fields of business, accounting, marketing, banking, engineering, law or other related fields that would help local business owners.

On Sept. 10 at noon the chairman of the Springfield area SCORE will be in Lincoln to meet with potential volunteers. Smiley said that he would like to see the program here start with three to five volunteers. The business executives would volunteer five to eight hours of their time per month.

This program would affect Logan County and assist businesses in Logan County only, Smiley said.

The establishment of the SCORE program is one of several initiatives set forth in the recently adopted five-year strategic plan of the Lincoln & Logan County Development Partnership.
