[December 08, 2008]  (AP)  Several storms were forecast to generate significant winter weather across the U.S. on Monday.

To the west, moderate to heavy snowfall was expected in the Great Basin and Rockies. Strong, north winds with gusts up to 45 mph were to create dangerous blowing snow conditions across Colorado. Drifting snow conditions were to make driving extremely dangerous. Colorado and northern New Mexico were to remain under a winter storm watch though late Monday evening.

HardwareIn the north, snow showers were forecast to fall in the Northern Plains. One to 2 inches of snow accumulation was expected across the lower elevations and 5 to 10 inches in the northern mountains. Temperatures were to dip in the afternoon.

The Great Lakes was also to see heavy snow accumulations. A mix of light snow showers and sleet was to fall across Northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin. Moderate to heavy lake-effect snowfall was expected across northern Michigan.

The Northern Plains and Great Lakes were to remain under a winter storm watch through Monday evening.

To the east, conditions were to remain dry, with cooler temperatures over the Northeast and the Southeast.

Temperatures were to range from the 10s to 40s in the Northeast, 40s to 70s in the Southeast, 10s to 30s in the Midwest and 40s to 70s in the Southwest.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states ranged from minus 22 degrees at Cook, Minn., to 84 degrees at Alva, Okla.
