"Gov. Blagojevich was arrested Dec. 9 by federal authorities in
response to allegations about his attempts to profit from naming the
next U.S. Senator. The ensuing investigation and judicial
proceedings will require his full attention," Brady said. "Although
I have long had concerns about his unwillingness to work with
lawmakers, he is now clearly unable to fulfill his official duties.
"Scores of state and federal officials from both parties have called
on Gov. Blagojevich to resign, but their requests do not seem to be
making much of an impression. Well, if he needs it in writing, here
it is," Brady said, referring to his Senate resolution, which will
be filed next week when the General Assembly returns to Springfield.
"It’s time for him to act in the best interests of the citizens and
resign immediately."
The 44th District senator says that after years of partisan
in-fighting that brought the legislative process to a veritable
standstill, the General Assembly has a lot of work to do to find
answers to the many problems facing Illinois.
"Having battled for six years to keep our state on course in a
rudderless ship, we are now asking the governor to step aside. The
nature and severity of the federal allegations will make it
impossible for him to participate effectively in our efforts to
chart a new direction for our state," Brady said. "We have a lot of
catching up to do."
