The nation's weather

[December 16, 2008]  (AP)  Wintry weather seemed to conquer virtually the entire nation early Tuesday as cold and snow from the Midwest and West spread to the East and South.

DonutsA cold front will trigger up to 2 inches of snow over the East and bring much cooler temperatures. Dangerous driving conditions were anticipated as ice accumulates.

In the South, the front will extend through the Mid-Atlantic states and into the Southeast. The region was to stay dry, but cooler temperatures were likely.

The northern and central Plains will see snow showers. A winter storm warning has been issued because this system was expected to trigger up to 5 inches of snow in some areas.

In the West, low pressure will continue to bring snow to the central Rockies through Tuesday afternoon when the system moves into the Plains.

A large storm system over the West Coast will continue to bring cooler temperatures to the Pacific Northwest and northern California. Scattered light rain showers were expected to continue over northern California.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Monday ranged from a low of minus 31 degrees at Glasgow, Mont., to a high of 82 degrees at Okeechobee, Fla.
