[December 19, 2008]  (AP)  Heavy snow was forecast for the upper Great Lakes and the Northeast on Friday, while more snow was expected in the Northwest and a rainy day loomed for the Southeast.

Up to a half-foot of snow was possible in the Great Lakes. A wintry mix was forecast for the Ohio Valley, which could see a couple of inches of accumulation.

CivicThe storm was then projected to head east, bringing rain to the Mid-Atlantic and a wintry mix to central and southern Pennsylvania and southern New Jersey. Heavy snow, ranging from 6 inches to a foot, was forecast for northern Pennsylvania, New York and most of New England.

Showers were expected across the Tennessee Valley and in parts of Mississippi, Alabama, northern Georgia and the western portions of the Carolinas.

Rain and snow were possible across the central Plains, the upper Midwest and the mid-Mississippi Valley. Partly to mostly cloudy skies were otherwise expected across the Plains.

More snow was forecast across the Northwest, as well as parts of Nevada and the Four Corners. Accumulations of a few inches were possible. Northern California could also see snow, but rain was expected for the rest of the state, as well as parts of the Southwest.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states on Thursday ranged from a low of minus 27 degrees at Ely, Minn., to a high of 120 degrees at Oakdale, La.
