[December 24, 2008]  (AP)  Snow, rain, ice and sleet were forecast for much of the central and eastern parts of the nation on Wednesday, threatening to disrupt Christmas Eve travel, while wet, cold weather was expected in much of the West.

RestaurantWidespread precipitation was predicted from the Mississippi Valley to the Mid-Atlantic and the Northeast. Ice or sleet was possible in the central Plains, the mid-Mississippi Valley, the Ohio Valley, New York and Pennsylvania, while moderate to heavy snow was expected across the Midwest, the Great Lakes and northern New England.

To the south, showers and thunderstorms were likely in the lower Mississippi Valley, the Tennessee Valley and the Mid-Atlantic. Severe thunderstorms packing damaging winds were possible in the lower Mississippi and Tennessee valleys.

To the west, a storm was predicted to slam into California while a cold front drops southeastward from the Gulf of Alaska. Rain and mountain snow were forecast over the Pacific Northwest and Northern California. They were expected to reach the Intermountain West, the Rockies and Southern California by evening.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states on Tuesday ranged from a low of minus 32 degrees at Plentywood, Mont., to a high of 79 degrees at Pecos, Texas.
