[December 29, 2008]  (AP)  A mix of rain and snow was forecast across the Pacific Northwest on Monday, while widespread snowfall was expected over the northern Great Basin and the northern Rockies, and showers were likely across the Southeast.

Rain was expected along the Northwest coast, with snow showers forecast farther inland. Total accumulation in the northern Great Basin and northern Rockies could reach between 6 and 12 inches by evening.

Winter storm warnings were posted for parts of the Northwest, the northern Great Basin and the northern Rockies. Forecasters said strong winds would create periods of blowing and drifting snow and hazardous conditions.

Showers and isolated thunderstorms were forecast from the Mid-Atlantic through central Florida. The heaviest showers were likely along the Gulf Coast, with lighter ones expected over inland areas.

The Northeast was forecast to rise into the 30s, 40s and 50s, while the Southeast was to see temperatures in the 60s to the 80s. The Midwest was expected to see temperatures ranging from the 10s to the 40s, while the southern Plains and the Southwest were to see temperatures in the 50s, 60s and 70s. The Northwest was predicted to rise into the 30s and 40s.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states on Sunday ranged from a low of minus 16 degrees at Warroad, Minn., to a high of 83 degrees at Punta Gorda, Fla.
