Streets Could Become Slick As Snow Accumulates

[February 06, 2008]  Dense snow falling over rain-soaked streets and walks could create slick conditions Wednesday.

The National Weather Service in Lincoln has issued the following short-term forecast and hazardous weather outlook:

Today: Periods of snow. High near 34. North-northwest wind between 10 and 17 mph, with gusts as high as 21 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100 percent. Total daytime snow accumulation of 1 to 3 inches possible.

Tonight: Scattered flurries before midnight. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 20. Blustery, with a northwest wind 17 to 20 mph, decreasing to between 9 and 12 mph.

This hazardous weather outlook is for portions of central Illinois: Christian, DeWitt, Logan, Macon McLean, Menard, Morgan, Sangamon and Scott counties.

Wednesday and Wednesday night

Snow will develop on the backside of a strong storm system. Total snowfall will range from 1 to 2 inches by the time the snow ends late Wednesday afternoon.

Recent heavy rains and rapid melting of snow have caused high water levels on many area rivers, creeks and streams. Flooding is occurring or expected to occur in many areas as a result. Monitor river warnings and statements for the latest information.

Thursday through Tuesday

Flooding will persist along many area rivers, creeks and streams over the next few days.
