[February 26, 2008]  (AP) Storms bringing rain and heavy snow crashed through the East early Tuesday, while high pressure and dry skies stretched from the West Coast to the Plains.

A mixture of rain, snow and sleet socked the Midwest. As the storm moves east during the day, snowfall will follow into the interior of the Northeast.

At the coast, higher temperatures were expected to turn the snow to rain. Northern New York and interior New England could have the worst snowfall.

West of this storm, clear skies were expected to spread through most of the country and dry conditions are expected. In addition to the clearing skies, moderating temperatures were in store as well.

Highs in Texas will drop substantially from Monday's sweltering heat. Temperatures on Tuesday will generally be in the 50s and 60s compared to the 80s and 90s experienced throughout the state a day earlier.

In the West, high pressure was to continue to build. High temperatures throughout California will rise into the 60s and 70s, with some scattered readings in the 80s anticipated in the southern deserts.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states on Monday ranged from a low of minus 6 degrees at Berlin, N.H., to a high of 99 degrees at Del Rio, Texas.
