MP Zion Girls Win Consolation Championship

[February 29, 2008]  JACKSONVILLE -- The girls from Mount Pulaski Zion Lutheran have completed their varsity basketball season. The highlight of the year was winning the consolation championship at the Salem Jacksonville Lutheran varsity tournament.

Zion lost to Mattoon St. John 18-12 but defeated the Jacksonville Big Shots 18-13 and won the final match with Triopia 19-18.

The Mount Pulaski team was comprised of one eighth-grader, Kelsey Griesheim, and five seventh-graders: Rachel Allen, Shanyn Gibbs, Allison Hickey, Sylvia Klumpp and Elyse McCormick. Several fifth-graders were also able to join the team: Elizabeth Allen, Shelby Young, Kelsey Wilham and Sammy Morris.

The fifth-graders also played several junior varsity games along with third-graders Kourtney Wilham and Ashlyn Hickey.

Varsity coach Ralph Allen was assisted by David Gibbs.
