[January 04, 2008]  (AP) A large Pacific storm barreled into the West Coast on Thursday, bringing heavy wind and rain to the Northwest, especially the Northern California coast.

The San Francisco Bay area was buffeted by rain in the afternoon, while higher elevations reported heavy snow. Buoys along the coast reported wind gusts exceeding 40 mph.

A high pressure system hovered over the East, bringing clear skies and cold temperatures. Temperatures reached below freezing all the way into South Florida, though the period of subfreezing temperatures there was brief and damage to crops was minimal.

In northern Maine, overnight lows dropped below minus 10.

Temperatures in the lower 48 states on Thursday ranged from a morning low of minus 24 degrees at Whitefield, N.H., to a midday high of 71 degrees at Tucson, Ariz.
