[January 11, 2008]  (AP) Tornadoes were reported in the Gulf South on Thursday and strong thunderstorms passed through the Mississippi Valley as a powerful low-pressure system deepened in the Midwest.

Tornadoes were spotted in Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama, uprooting trees and causing scattered property damage. Between the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers, heavy rainfall caused flood waters to rise.

Rain and high-elevation snow fell throughout Washington and Oregon. Light rain fell across California's Central Valley.

As precipitation worked its way into the Sierra Nevada, some of higher elevations saw some minor snow accumulation.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Thursday ranged from a morning low of minus 14 degrees at Alamosa, Colo., to a midday high of 84 degrees at Plant City, Fla.
