[January 14, 2008]  (AP) A winter storm was expected to intensify along the East Coast on Monday, dropping heavy snow from New Jersey to Maine, while the Plains and Southeast were expected to be clear and dry.

Massachusetts was among areas expected to see more than a foot of snow. New York City was under a heavy snow warning until noon and forecasters expected to see up to 7 inches in the borough of Manhattan.

Light snow was expected in the Northeast interior and Great Lakes region.

The Plains and Southeast were expected to see relatively clear skies.

A Pacific storm was expected to smack the Northwest with rain. Temperatures in the region were expected to be relatively warm.

South of this storm, California was expected to be dry and experience warmer temperatures.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Sunday ranged from a low of minus 17 degrees at Alamosa, Colo., to a high of 84 degrees at Marathon, Fla.
