1960: Singer Sam Cooke signed with RCA Records.

1976: "Donny and Marie" premiered on ABC. It was the first variety show hosted by a brother and sister team, Donny and Marie Osmond.

1977: The TV mini-series "Roots," based on the Alex Haley novel, began on ABC.

1979: "The Dukes of Hazzard" made its debut on CBS.

1982: Singer Ozzy Osbourne bit the head off a live bat during a concert in Des Moines, Iowa.

1990: Comedians Roseanne Barr and Tom Arnold got married. They have since split up.

1990: Actress Ava Gardner died of pneumonia at her London home. She was 68.

1993: Actress Audrey Hepburn died of cancer in Switzerland at the age of 63.

1994: Actor Telly Savalas died, a day after his 70th birthday.

2004: Jennifer Lopez called off her engagement to Ben Affleck.

2005: Johnny Carson died from complications from emphysema in Los Angeles. He was 79.

2006: "Survivor" winner Richard Hatch was convicted of failing to pay taxes on his $1 million prize. He was sentenced to 51 months in prison.
