[January 17, 2008]  (AP) Substantial morning rain was expected in the Southeast Thursday, moving up through the Appalachians and into the Mid-Atlantic.

Freezing rain will fall on the eastern slopes of the mountain chain.

Near the end of the day, the precipitation will move into the Northeast, with southern New England getting snow.

Several inches of snow were also expected to fall on the east side of the Northern Rockies.

Cold air was to move across a wide swath of the country from the Great Basin through the Plains. The Rockies and Upper Midwest will have temperatures in the 20s and 30s. Temperatures will be in the 30s as far south as the Mexican border near Texas and New Mexico.

The Northeast will have temperatures in the 20s and 30s, while temperatures in the Southeast will be mostly in the 50s and 60s. The Northwest will rise into the 30s and 40s.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Wednesday ranged from a low of minus 23 degrees at Yellowstone, Wyo., to a high of 79 degrees at Key West, Fla.
