[January 21, 2008]  The Lincoln Community High School speech team showed strength this weekend at the Downers Grove Speech Tournament. The team placed five individuals in the semifinal rounds, with one individual advancing to the final round.

Advancing to the final was co-captain Janel Filbeck, a senior, who placed third in oratory.

Carrie Schreiber, one of the Lincoln coaches, said, "This was Janel's third year in a row to make it to the oratory finals; she is truly a gifted speaker when it comes to tough competition."

Filbeck was also a semifinalist in declamation. Other leaders for the team advancing to the semifinal rounds were Cameron Kurtz in extemporaneous, Annie Sheley in radio and Todd Schumacher in dramatic interpretation.

Next weekend the Lincoln team hosts the last regular-season tournament of the year before the state series. Competition begins at 8:30 a.m. Saturday.
