[January 22, 2008]  (AP) Precipitation was expected Tuesday in the eastern half of the country as a cold front moved from the Mississippi into the Appalachians and eventually to the East Coast.

Rain and snow was expected in the Appalachians and the Northeastern Interior, with sleet and freezing rain forecast in the Piedmont region of Virginia and North Carolina. Rain was expected east of the Appalachians.

In the Plains, skies will clear out a bit and cold temperatures will stick around. In northern Minnesota, highs should remain below 0.

The West will also remain cold, with snow expected at unusually low elevations throughout California. Temperatures will be more than 10 degrees below normal in areas.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Sunday ranged from a low of minus 33 degrees at Butte, Mont., to a high of 79 degrees at McAllen, Texas.
