[January 23, 2008]  (AP) A storm off the West Coast will move southeast on Wednesday, bringing heavy precipitation and strong winds. Snow accumulations could exceed a foot in the mountains above 4,000 feet, and winds of 20 to 30 mph with gusts to 40 mph were expected.

Bitterly cold weather is in store for the Midwest, with strong northwest winds causing wind chill readings dropping to 20 to 30 degrees below zero.

There will also be significant snow across the upper Great Lakes, upper Mississippi Valley and central Plains. Strong winds will cause drifting snow and reduced visibility, with whiteout conditions possible.

Another storm was expected to produce snowfall across the eastern Great Lakes and New England.

Rain was also expected across the Southern states into Thursday.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Tuesday ranged from a low of minus 36 degrees at Boulder, Wyo., to a high of 82 degrees at Fort Myers, Fla.
