[January 30, 2008]  CHICAGO -- The following statement was released Tuesday from Gov. Rod R. Blagojevich on the VA inspector general and medical inspector's reports on the Marion VA Medical Center:

"Our veterans fought for all of us to be free, and it is only right that we provide them with the best possible care this great nation has to offer. Providing veterans substandard treatment, resulting in nine deaths and 34 others seriously injured, is simply unacceptable. The fact of the matter is the VA must ensure that its hiring procedures do not allow anyone to cut corners and compromise excellence. The VA must put procedures in place to ensure that only qualified doctors are hired and that these medical professionals are given the cultural training that comes with the unique culture of the military.

"The VA system is facing new challenges as a result of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and the federal government did not prepare for this type of influx of new patients. Many more wounded soldiers are surviving very serious injuries. I hope and urge the VA to take quick actions on the series of recommendations the inspector general made in his report. I want to assure our veterans that we in Illinois, at the state level, are doing everything in our power to make sure they all have access to the care they need and rightfully deserve."
