[January 30, 2008]  (AP) A cold front barreling through the eastern half of the country Wednesday was expected to cause temperatures to plunge.

Rain was forecast in the Northeast and snow in the Midwest and Great Lakes region.

The Northern Plains were expected to remain cold Wednesday.

Rain and high-elevation snow were forecast for the Northwest and northern California. Partly cloudy skies were expected in Southern California.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Tuesday ranged from a low of minus 31 degrees at Morgan, Mont., to a high of 92 degrees at Kingsville, Texas.
