[January 31, 2008]  CHICAGO -- The following statement from Gov. Rod R. Blagojevich was released Wednesday on the U.S. Department of Energy’s announcement to dismantle FutureGen:

"I am extremely disappointed that U.S. Department of Energy Secretary Samuel Bodman is proceeding today in announcing a proposal to dismantle FutureGen. I spoke with the Secretary this afternoon and urged him to keep the president’s commitment to all the researchers, private-sector supporters, public officials and -- most importantly -- the people of central Illinois who have worked so hard to bring this landmark project to fruition. FutureGen is too important, nationally and internationally, to fall victim to political games. Today marks an unfortunate setback, but we will not give up the effort to make FutureGen a reality in Illinois. I urge President Bush, who initiated the FutureGen project in 2003 and has said repeatedly that we need to develop domestic energy resources, to take a personal role in making sure the project moves forward as planned."
