The nation's weather

[July 16, 2008]  (AP)  Showers and storms stretched from Montana to the very northern edge of the Northeast early Wednesday, while the Midwest and Central Plains were to be calm and sunny.

The most severe weather in the nation was expected to be in the Northern Plains and upper Midwest. Expect heavy rain and strong winds with these storms, plus hail and possibly tornadoes.

The Central Plains will see mostly clear skies, while onshore flow from a high pressure system in the Gulf will produce thunderstorms across Texas. Temperatures across the Plains were expected to range from near 100 down to the 70s in the Northern Plains.

High pressure was expected to dominate the eastern half of the country. The Northeast will see mostly clear skies and warm conditions, with the exception of the northern part of New England, which was forecast to be cloudy and potentially rainy. Temperatures across the region will be in the 70s and 80s in New England and the high 80s to low 90s in the Mid-Atlantic.

In the Southeast, lingering low pressure was expected to trigger heavy rain and thunderstorms across Florida and along the East Coast up through to North Carolina.

These storms will produce heavy rain and gusty winds, and possibly hail. The rest of the Southeast will be clear due to high pressure across the region. Temperatures across the Southeast will be in the 80s and 90s.

The Pacific Northwest was to be mostly clear. Further inland, the cold front will kick up showers and storms across Montana and Idaho. Temperatures across the Northwest will range in the 70s and 80s.

The Southwest will see seasonable thunderstorms, mostly in the Four Corners. The rest of the Southwest should be dry and hot. Temperatures across the region will be in the 80s and 90s, with 100s in the hottest areas.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states on Tuesday ranged from a low of 35 degrees at Pahaska, Wyo., to a high of 116 degrees at Death Valley, Calif.
