Fierce cloud-to-ground lightning accompanied "derecho" straight- line winds

One of the signature hawthorn trees on the county courthouse square was severely damaged.

A walnut tree in Postville Park on Fifth Street was snapped clean at 6 feet off  the ground.

Ferocious winds downed even young and lower-lying limbs and branches in residential areas.

A large sycamore branch was felled on Peoria Street, evicting a hive of bees.

Complete with honeycombs, this beehive in a tree was completely destroyed.
