[June 17, 2008]  (AP)  More severe weather was possible in the central Plains on Tuesday, with heavy rain and strong thunderstorms packing high winds and hail forecast across the region. The storms could continue flooding the already saturated Plains.

In the Northeast, a front moving over New England was expected to bring light to moderate rain and possibly thunderstorms to the region. Cooler temperatures were forecast.

Thunderstorms were also likely in the Southeast as the front approaches and a high pressure system in the Gulf moves warm, moist air into the region. Temperatures were forecast to be well into the 90s.

High pressure was expected to keep the Northwest mostly clear with seasonable temperatures. Highs across the region were predicted to be in 70s and 80s inland, with 50s and 60s along the coast.

Hot, dry conditions were expected to prevail in the Southwest, where temperatures in the 80s and 90s were forecast across much of the region, except for triple-digit readings in desert areas.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states on Monday ranged from a low of 30 degrees at Stanley, Idaho, to a high of 111 degrees at Needles, Calif.
