[March 15, 2008]  PETERSBURG -- Those who use GPS devices are invited to use them during an April 12 treasure hunt that begins at Lincoln's New Salem State Historic Site near Petersburg.

Participants will start the geocaching event at the Lincoln's New Salem Visitor Center. Approximately 30-40 caches associated with historical events that occurred in Menard County will be hidden throughout the county.

The event is co-sponsored by Menard County Trails & Greenways, Central Illinois Geocaching Association, and Lincoln's New Salem State Historic Site.

Preregistration for the GPS-guided treasure hunt closes March 31. A $10 fee includes a light continental breakfast, local merchants' bag and an event T-shirt. Paying participants who find the clues for 10 special caches will receive a free, specifically designed event pin. Those participating without paying the registration fee will have the opportunity to purchase the T-shirt and or the event pin at the beginning or end of the event. A hand-held GPS unit will be needed for each vehicle. GPS coordinates will be available for download or in printed form at the start location.
