[March 26, 2008]  Aldermen Jeff Hoinacki and Buzz Busby reported on attending an Illinois Works Coalition meeting where Glenn Poshard presented.

Illinois Works is the $25 billion capital building plan put forth by Gov. Rod Blagojevich to improve or build schools, roads, bridges, airports and transit systems.

The aldermen encouraged others to attend one of the statewide presentations, if able. (Locations of future Illinois Works presentations)

Hoinacki said they're searching for how to fund the projects they want to do.

Busby commented that he couldn't see where the state would find the funding for the projects, especially when the governor "has taken from the table any increase in sales or income taxes." He could only see that they would add new taxes and rename them "user fees," and increase the current user fees, such as license fees. "I doubt they'll get up to the $25 billion that they're trying to get up to for this construction program," he said. "I wish them a lot of luck."

Alderman Benny Huskins reminded the council that there is a tire collection at the Logan County Fairgrounds on April 5.

Mayor Beth Davis-Kavelman commented that Illinois Works could be important to the future of the Fifth Street Road project.

She added that she has been invited to a round-table discussion with state Reps. Raymond Poe and Rich Brauer next week. She'll work with them to try to help this area get some money, she said.
