[March 27, 2008]  The Logan County Health Department, Logan County Joint Solid Waste Agency, and Lincoln Street and Alley Department are coordinating with the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency to sponsor a used tire collection day. The collection will be April 5, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the Logan County Fairgrounds in Lincoln. Participants are asked to use the Short 11th St. entrance (South Gate).

The collection event will accept tractor, truck and passenger tires, including those on the rim. Large industrial and off-road tires will not be accepted. The maximum number of tires that an individual may bring to the collection is limited to 1,000. All participants must complete a "Consensual Removal Agreement" before any tires are unloaded. These forms are available in advance of the collection day at the Logan County Health Department, Logan County Farm Bureau, Logan County USDA office and the Logan County Cooperative Extension office. Individuals are encouraged to obtain forms in advance and bring the completed forms to the collection site to expedite the process.

Previous participants of used tire collection days in Illinois are not eligible to participate in this event. Tires will not be accepted from businesses such as tire dealers, gas stations, commercial trucking companies or any other enterprise that will be generating and accumulating used tires after the collection has occurred. No used tires will be collected from vehicles having license plates from outside the state of Illinois.

Logan County residents are encouraged to take this opportunity to eliminate waste tires from their properties. Used tires are unsightly and pose health hazards by providing breeding areas for mosquitoes that can transmit West Nile virus.

If you have any questions about the used tire collection day, contact the Logan County Health Department at 217-735-2317 or the Logan County Joint Solid Waste Agency at 217-732-9636.
