[May 02, 2008]  (AP)  Severe weather was expected to continue across the nation's midsection Friday.

The most intense thunderstorms were forecast for the Mississippi Valley, along with strong tornadoes, large hail and gusty winds.

In the Northeast, showers and clouds were expected in New York, New Jersey and southern New England.

The Southeast was likely to see clear skies and dry conditions, with temperatures climbing several degrees.

In the Southwest, temperatures were also expected to warm up a few degrees. The Northwest was to see clouds, with rain and high elevation snow.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Thursday ranged from a low of 1 degree at Winter Haven, Fla., to a high of 106 degrees at Laredo, Texas.
